I've recently moved from a flat to a house with lawn and garden. Apart from moving the lawn, I have no idea what to do with it - how to look after what's already here, how to get rid of the weeds (even how to tell which are weeds and which are *real* plants!), and how to make it a nice garden in general.

Where can I find a guide online that's free, and starts from an assumption of knowing nothing?!?

Hello-------I am a Certified Master Gardener.

I would like to recommend:

SUNSET WESTERN GARDEN BOOK

It has a wealth of information. I've had this book (I get every updated volume) for 21 years and it is SUPER USEFUL.

I sincerely hope this helps.

Fertilize your lawn 3 times a year, on or around these holidays,--Easter,Memorial Day, Halloween--some people dont fertilize on Halloween, but it makes the roots grow thicker over the winter months and come in better in the Spring. Water at night during the hottest months in the summer, your lawn will stay wetter longer and be greener. Spray three times a year for broadleaf weeds, Weed-B-Gone works great and wont hurt your lawn-read the directions on the bottle. My general over simplified rule for garden weeds is, if it isnt nice to look at--pull it out, its a weed. Hope this helps.

In the mean time, you may want to treat your garden with a selective herbacide. Ask you local nurseryman for a recommendation. A selective herbacide will kill only the weeds and not the lawn.

Where are you? ("flat" suggests not US) -- where you are will help determine what resources may be most useful to you.

A knowledgeable neighbor can help you learn to distinguish "weedy" from "cultivated". Simplest weeding technique is grab and pull, and it usually works quite well. Mulch (2-4" of organic material like bark chips, grass clippings, chopped hay, etc) will help keep the weeds down and the wanted plants happy.

If you're in the UK, you might want to look at Brickell's RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening and Spence's RHS Gardening Month by Month.

Go to:
http://www.scotslawn.com
Sign up to have a monthly email sent to you. It will guide you year round as what needs to be done to your lawn. Be sure to put their email address into your email address book so their emails will not go into your junk mail.

The best thing you can do for yourself is have an automatic sprinkler system put in.

Congratulations on your new home.
