Any bleeding that lasts for 10 or more days needs to be evaluated by a doctor to determine the cause. If you are changing one or more pads or tampons in an hour or less, this is considered excessive bleeding and needs to be checked out immediately as it can lead to anemia. Period abnormalities can be due to many things including stress, weight gain/loss, thyroid, hormonal imbalance, infection, illness, medications, polyp, cyst, amongst other reasons. The only way to know for sure exactly what is going on is to see your doctor for an exam and testing. If your doctor suspects a thyroid or hormonal imbalance, a simple blood test will show this. You need to see a doctor to have this taken care of.

That's seriously WAY too long to be on your period. The average period lasts 5-7 days and shows up every 28 days. It's not uncommon to maybe bleed really lightly in between, that's called spotting and is totally normal, but you shouldn't NOT be having a break. I know you don't want to tell your mom or go to the doctors, but something could be really wrong, I really suggest that you go. Don't feel dumb, everybody's got different bodies and different tendencies. But you really need to go to the doctor. You also might want to check out a website called www.webmd.com it might be able to give you some more information. Good luck!
