It is the baby's current weight. They told me it was "right on the mark" but I must admit I'm a little nervous that he's too big. My first baby was almost 10 pounds.

There really is no "average" weight for a baby that late in pregnancy. Babies have such a huge variation in weight that it's hard to find a true average.

It's a respectable weight for a baby at 37 weeks though - congratulations!

About right for some parts of the country.

Any way that is an "estimate" like groping in the dark. Not always right. Probably smaller.

Average pregnancy is 40 weeks and at 40 weeks your baby is fully developed. They do not keep gaining weight after 40 weeks as the placenta has reached its maximan and will start to deteriorate slowly and baby may even lose weight if it goes over 40 weeks. At 37 weeks the baby may still have some problems with lung development. Never can tell. Yes many babies are fine at 37 weeks. Survival rate for premature babies.
Black females at the top of the list.
White females
Black Males
White Males.

The last 37 week baby I helped deliver because the girl stopped taking the medication that was keeping her from going into labor. It ended up with the lungs not fully formed and was on the ventelator for 3 weeks. It was a white male.

Yes, anything over 5 lbs. by 36 weeks puts the baby in good health, weight wise. Most babies gain 1/2 - 1 lb each week during the last month of pregnancy, so your little gal could put on another pound or two by birth. Ultrasounds are not known for being too accurate when it comes to weight. My last was predicted to be over 9 lbs. at 38 weeks, but 12 days AFTER my due date, weighed in at a normal 7 lbs. 14 oz.

No matter what they've told you your baby weighs, it's just an estimation. They told my sister her baby was over 8 lbs at 37 weeks...she popped out 5 days before the due date at 7 lbs flat, a teeny little bean.

My second baby was probably about that weight then...he came out at 9 lbs 6 oz a couple of weeks after that.

It's an average sized full term baby. Maybe a little on the big side for 37 weeks, but it could be that your due date was not accurate. I would be happy with this and not worry about it. It is certainly not too big, and babies with low birth rates are usually the ones who have problems.

Is this the baby's weight now or a projected birth weight? Either way it's not abnormal. Most babies are born between 6-9 lbs. Mine was smaller 6 lbs. 13 oz. but I'm a small lady. All that matters is that your baby is healthy.
