2 questions ...

1. does sperm cells carry both xx or xy chromosomes or only x or y?

i think it is either x or y.

2. do each testicle(human) produce either x or y chromosome sperm or do they both produce both x and y?

cause then you could just get a vasectomy on one testical, or extract sperm from the testicle with the sex you want for artificial insemination and get the child sex you wish for.

thanks for responding

1.You are quite right, it will carry only either x or y.

Since the egg cell only has X chromosomes, it is the male sperm which will have to carry either an X chromosome as well to produce xx (girl) or a Y chromosome to produce xy (boy)

All our chromosomes come in pairs, including our sex-determining chromosomes. Our father's sperm will supply one half, and our mother's ovum will supply the other half, so that we have two sets that pair up. We get 23 from our father and 23 that match those from the mother, a total of 46 chromosomes.

2. they both produce x and y. It's really quite random. As you said, if that was true, it would be ridiculous as there are some cultures that believe having a boy is better than a girl, and imagine a whole country of boys! The country'll die out in the next generation.

1) yes you are right, sperm carry either X or Y
2) since it carries X or Y, the testicle produces both types

You are correct ... it is either X or Y (not both). Egg cells (ova) are all X.

But as for #2 ... testicles do not specialize. Both produce both types of sperm cells.

You are funny. I don't think it will work. I wonder if the vasctomy will be half-price!
