Sadly, as an American citizen, I have to admit that you're right about the majority of the people here. They're not terribly bright sometimes, especially when it comes to foreign cultures.

Me, I live in NYC. I'm exposed to a dozen different cultures at the deli alone. Travelling abroad helps a bit, too. Pity the rest of the US doesn't get out as much as I do...

(Oh, and Groundskeeper Willy IS sort of a stereotype - but definitely not a typical Scot, which I think is what you meant.)

It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of them thought that, espcecially going by some of the comments i've overheard from American tourists in Edinburgh (where I am from). Ignorance isn't just an American trait though, it can be found everywhere & I am sure there are far more Americans (the silent majority) who are better informed about our wonderful land.

Firstly - it's "Scots" not "Scotts"...

Secondly - less than half of all Americans own passports, so I wouldn't rely on their knowledge of foreign affairs. Just remind the ignorant Americans (of which there are far too many, unfortunately) that we invented the TVs that they love so much, and sit back to watch their heads explode.

It doesn`t surprise me at all, i read about another survey a while back ,where Americans were being asked questions about geography and it turned out many of them thought Europe was a town somewhere near the Eifel Tower

I have always wanted to visit Scotland. I heard that Scotland was a lovely country and the people are very down to Earth. Do you want to switch countries? With the racial distress over the Jena 6 incident here in America, I'll be more than happy to move over to Scotland.

well I don't know! I live in the south of England so must be wealthy - I wish! People in Devon and Cornwall live on cream teas, Wales is the land of song - tell that to my mates hubby he could never sing a note. Generalisations, misconceptions, quaint, cute - gosh and all that. but then these big brash people from? We are all likely to believe in the stereotype - these days fed by the media. Now don't forget to put out your candle when you go to bed in your little truckle bed now will you? Oh yes you do have the electric I wonder if I'm thinking of power cuts mmm?

Have you ever been hit on by a North American woman looking for a hero from her historical romance novel? It's happened to me -- and I'm not even male. ;-)

They mostly understand that they're not actually going to find an illegitimate laird's son living in a ruined tower. Just a brusque charm with Vin Diesel muscles.

It's all just too amusing.

What most Americans think about other countries should never be taken seriously (unless you have oil, in which case you had better take them seriously).

Come to think of it, Scotland has oil. You could be next...
