Kay, the needle is only 10" long, driven to the hilt when administered, and the pain is fleeting (lasting no more than 1 week!) The vaccine itself, feels like fire, but soon enough (4 -5 hours) the pain settles down to a mere torture. Again, lasts no more than a week. (Flu, on the other hand, lasts 3 days)
Now, let's get real here. Flu can KILL! It will make you miserable no matter how mild the case. And, for the most part, the CDC gets it pretty close as to what variety is going to hit this year. Get your butt to the doctor's and get the shot...you feel practically nothing, and they will give you a lollipop afterwards if you cause enough rucus.! I do not want to lose you here on YA! We are all at an age where these shots are highly recommended. IF you are allergic to eggs, ASK first! Make sure the doc knows this...the vaccine may be egg based and you will not be able to take it...then again, it may not be...so check it out, and get the shot. Good grief! I will come over and give you one...it really is no big deal. Peace and love, Goldwing

Actually that needle is probably only An inch or inch & half long. Length isn't the part that hurts but the gauge or how thick the needle is. Most insulin needles are about 26 to 29 gauge, but usually vaccines are about 22 to 24 gauge.
I used to not look, but after I had to do my own, well, all that changed.
If you can find a nurse who is actually good at her job, she will be able to give you an injection that won't hurt any more than a mosquito bite.
My oldest son, "Bear" always asks if they are good at doing shots, because he gives them one chance, after that , he has been known to slap their hand & do his own injection.
I have some very outspoken children. I know that they get most of this from me, because I had to teach my husband how to deal with the medical professionals without wanting to rip off their heads.
Hey, just don't look when you get a shot. Then go treat yourself to an ice cream.

Sorry, I never look at a shot, I look the other way before I get
one. It's bad enough I have to use a short syringe several
times a day for Diabetes. And then I have to look where I'm
giving it. I heard the flu shots will be available soon. And I'm
still fence straddling on whether to get one this year. I have a
flu bug right now, that's hard to shake. And I don't want to in-
vite another one. It seems I get some strain each year, with
the shot. Last year, I was flu free, and no shot.

That needle isn't even visible. It's beneath the plastic covering at the tip and measures maybe 3" if that. You're seeing the syringe in the picture, the part that holds the liquid that is dispensed into your arm. The needles are quite small compared to the syringe.
Besides, the flu can kill you. I think you can handle a few wincing moments as the trade-off.

When I was a little girl...we always had to go to the Health Clinic and get our shots for the school year (smallpox etc). Right before we went...the other kids would tell us about the health nurse, Mrs. Crook. She was BIG and MEAN looking. They said that she would take a BIG needle (like the one in your picture) and stand on the other side of the room and THROW it at us. Scared us so bad. Of course, she didn't...but when we came out we'd tell the next group that she did. I wonder how long they kept that "scare tactic" going !!

I gotta laugh at this one hehehehehehehe. At my advanced age I'm more scared of the flu than the flu shot. People have actually DIED this year in Aussie from the flu including 6 young ones.
Go get ya shot ya wussy. I got mine and a pneumonia shot and I didn't get either. So there!!!
Mind you I did get pleurisy, bronchitis, infected throat glands and now sinusitis all in the last 5 weeks!!! LOL Ow my aching head.
