Do not worry, your Newt will not get lonely. In the wild Newts do not show any group behaviours. You may find more than one in the same habitat but they do not interact in the way a social groups. They do not show any social interactions or bonding.

I would reccomend not really taking your Newt in for Show and Tell. If you really really really want to, it should be okay, Newts are pretty good at handling stress, but this should be a one time thing and only once your Newt is use to you and its new environment, give it a few months.

When they must be handled (Such as transferring it to a travel container) wash your hands first hot soapy water, being careful to remove all traces of the soap.Gently scoop them up, and take care to fully support them with your hand, using your second hand to assure they do not fall. Wash your hands thoroughly again when you are done handling them.

Do not let your friends handle them. Remeber they absorb stuff through their skin so can get sick easily.

Your newt will not be lonely. Amphibians and reptiles can stress easily when their routine is changed, so just leave him home. They are solitary animals and will do just fine while you're at school. :)
