You local library should have all of the old newspapers on micro film.

Most libraries have microfiche archives of the local papers going back for years. If the "obit' you want is of a well known person wikipedia often has links to the obits.

You might try the askjeeves or altavista search engines. If you are willing to spend to find the obits lexis Nexis may connect.
