I would go with a Core 2 Duo cpu, Vista Premium(basic doesn't have Aero which is very nice) and up the ram to 2GB. A decent graphics card that can run DirectX 10 also(nvidia 8000 series or ATI 2000 series). As far as a printer goes there are some really good deals on all-in-ones that you can copy scan and fax on and they cost about 1/2 the price of what a regular printer did 3-4 years ago. With computer prices so low right now you can get a really nice machine with the extras that will make it nicer at a very reasonable price. Just make sure whatever printer you buy has Vista drivers either on the CD or their website. Instead of going with a low end machine I suggest you put extras in from the get go so you dont spend the next 3 years thinking "i wish i would have gotten this or that"

It will really depend on what you intend to use the computer for. Since this is your first purchase, I assume that you will use this computer mainly for word documents and internet browsing. Maybe some games that will came free with the machine or those that you can download online.
For this type of use, you can go with any computer brand available as they will all work the same with the applications I mentioned above. I suggest to make sure that you have at least 1GB of RAM. More memory space will help you work with more than 1 application at a time without noticing any delays.
If you are planning on playing 3D games with heavy graphics then you will need to look for the higher end machines.
For Printer. They are all the same. You can go to office depot and do a sample printout on all the printer models that they have and you can decide on which printer do you prefer. For me, I like HP products and Epson's. Those two brands will give you picture quality printout.
Goodluck!

If you're planning to play flash player games, board games, surf alot, download music or movies, watch movies or music videos, multi-task..............i would go with any of intel's dual processors (eg. intel core 2 duo) + nvidia ge force graphics card 128MB or higher(don't get a graphics display that is installed on the motherboard) + sound blaster 5.1 + 4 or more USB (2.0) + 1GB or more R.A.M + Ethernet 10/100 (for highspeed internet) or 56K modem (for dial-up internet) + windows vista basic or premium/windows xp home or pro if available (would go with xp) (vista is ok) + wireless keyboard & mouse (if extra $$ is available) + anti-virus software will be included with your new computer, but only for 3 to 6 months. After that you have to buy a subscription or download a free one at www.download.com. AVG free antivirus, preferable(very important). A lexmark 2300 printer is affordable around ($60) and the ink cost $20. Brother and cannon printers are fine also but costs a little more.

Depends on the usage of the computer. For gaming, get as much of everything that you can afford. Don't get graphics card that is built into the mobo. Make sure its an Inter Core 2 Duo. The Quad cores are still overpriced and underutilized. Get as much RAM as you can, 1-4 GB. Also, get XP and not Vista.

It depends on what you do, and what your budget is.
If you just browse the web, listen to music, type documents, burn CD/DVDs, upload photos....just about any dual-core PC with 2gb of RAM will do just fine. You can get a decent bundle/setup at the local CircuitCity or BestBuy for $500 after rebate(s).
But, if you do print a LOT of black/white papers, look into a lazer printer. You can find them on rebate in the Sunday ads for $65+.
