I guess because of that wives tale if you shave it, it will grow back thicker, which science has now dispproved as false. It will only grow back thicker depending on your genetic make-up and the number of hair folicals you have.

Because though I was born and raised in this great country, my ancestors are French. Unfortunately, the French sent down my family tree a gene that causes excessive hair growth in places I'd rather not keep hair.
There is ONLY so much tweezing/waxing/depilitating that one woman can do in a day and not sacrifice SLEEP for the sake of being "hairless".
Hence, every now and then (between the waxing removal of the French within), I do sport a mustache. Not for long, mind you, but it does happen on occasion. :-P

Every woman has facial hair, body hair, etc. Many just remove it. Also, if a woman is lighter-haired, it may be invisible to the naked eye. I doubt more American women have moustaches than anywhere else.

All women have facial hair. Some women just have darker facial hair than others, and some women get rid of it and some don't bother.
Whatever country you come from, the women there have facial hair too. Look more closely.

For one thing, it's not all about American women. Everyone has facial hair regardless of being male or female. Why do men have nipples?? They don't even need them!

I don't have a mustache and it's not because I remove it through waxing or other means. I just don't have sufficient facial hair.
