I've gone through three vacuum cleaners in a two years and have spent thousands. Additionally, one vacuum cleaner was so heavy, it caused me back pain.

Hello,

Great question, somebody just sent me an email asking the same question. I have several recommendations for you:

Hoover Tempo Widepath: 6.5 lbs.
This is one of the most popular vacuum cleaners. People like it because it's extremely powerful, cheap, and lightweight. This unit retails for about $70 bucks on Amazon and I have a full review of this particular vacuum on my site.

Bissell 3106A Featherweight Lightweight Vacuum: 3.5 lbs.
If the Hoover Tempo Widepath is still too heavy and expensive for you, I recommend the Bissell 3106A Featherweight Vacuum. It has a fair amount of power considering it’s very light 3.5 lb. frame and coming in at $20 bucks, you’re not going to find a cheaper vacuum that delivers solid, consistent performance. I haven’t written up a proper review for this vacuum yet, and if I do I’ll be sure to let ya know.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask them. I try to answer my fan mail same or next day.

Sincerely,
The Vacuum Sensei

I have two vacuums-- both Eureka. One is bagless, one isn't. They weigh about 12 pounds and cost $150.

I did buy an Oreck a couple years ago...spent $200 (bought it from a commercial janitorial website.) My only complaint with the Oreck was it didn't pick up cat hair as much as I would have liked. I gave the vac to my mother and she loves it since it only weighs 8 pounds. It did a fabulous job on bare floors also, and was slim enough to go around the toilet (I have long hair so for some reason I have gobs of hair/dust in the bathroom.)

I would recommend that vac to anyone who needs a good, lightweight vacuum. Only don't buy it from an Oreck store, its $189 (plus shipping, so the total should run around $200) from www.jondon.com. If I recall, the vacuum arrived within 3-5 days. The bags are fairly reasonably priced, you can get them on eBay for less than $1/bag.

Good luck!

I have a Bissell liftoff and it works really well. We have three cats and a dog and it picks up all that hair. You can detach the canister and carry it around with just the hoses which is really helpful to clean in small spaces. I absolutely love this vacuum.

You pretty much get what you pay for, if you want one that is good but worth every penny spent. Get a Dyson, trust me the ends justifies the means.
