Over time havent we seen what looks like republicans starting to think about this war and see it as the failure it is, and make it seem in their interviews that they really want change and they care about our troops and lack of political progress, and all that.

Well, what happens when it comes time to actually voting?

A simple measure that would give troops equal time at home as they are deployed .. IS ACTUALLY WHATS BEST for the troops.
Yet Republicans dont even allow that.

Judge these republicans on how they vote.
Not how they talk on their interviews.

How many people have even served in the military?

You seem to believe everything the repukicans say.

#1 - Soldiers need rest time. 15 months is too long a deployment for them and their families. They are not machines!
#2 - If you break them down now, what happens when a real threat occurs..we will be too depleted to be effective
And a DRAFT will be required!!!!
#3 - Congres has the authority to declare war, defund the war and retract the war!
#4 - this is not a true war
Its labelled as war to help bush with his agenda

soldiers are trained machines. they do the work of the higher military officials.
i mean, what do you want?? a revolving door military, just come and serve as long as you want when you want? give me a break. its their job. just like you and your job, you probbaly get a certain amount of time off from your work. granted youre not in deaths grasp sitting at your desk but as far as i know the military is volunteer..

The Dems are REALLY trying, but there aren't enough Republican senators who have yet been swayed. The problem is, to actually get bills passed, you need at least a 60-count majority in the Senate along with a president of the same political party. Anything less and nothing gets done...history has shown this over and over. The slim Democratic majority in the Senate is simply not enough. The only way the course of the war will change significantly is if we get nine more Democratic senators in Congress and a Democratic president. Or, if another domestic terrorist attack succeeds...but of course I would much prefer the former happen.

I agree with you that equalizing deployment and leave time seems fair. However, when fighting a war, you don't fight always on the basis of what's convenient for the troops. You conduct the war in a way that you can win. Overextending deployment times can backfire by lowering morale, but decreasing deployment time can also endanger the mission by forcing more logistics to accomplish what you need with fewer soldiers on the ground.

I'm in favor of equalizing time, but the Republicans who vote against this think it's better to maintain status quo. They do this because they want the mission to succeed, not because they enjoy punishing troops. The surge has reduced violence by about 50%, which is great, but all of that could lose steam when troop levels drop.

While I am a liberal, and have been pretty disgusted with how congress has refused to take any action or responsibility in the waging of this war, I am also a fair minded citizen. I long ago stopped playing the game of partisan party polotics. The political rhetoric of the parties is something both parties want us to buy into. I refuse.

Yes, a majority of Republicans worked together to halt progress of the bill you mention. However, several of them who had been vocal did indeed continue to support he measure. Senator Hagel is, in fact still trying to get something done. You should also acknowledge, in all fairness, that several Democrats also worked with the majority of Republicans to block this bill.

Let's all stop doing what both parties want us to do. Let's stop playing the partisan game of divisiveness. We need to start working together to get changes made. The parties do not represent us any longer. They place party needs ahead of national needs. It is time for them to put their nation ahead of their party. It is time for us to make them do it.

Redshirt pretty much hit this nail right on the head.

To answer your second question, I served my nation proudly in the US Aiar Force.

I am a Vet and I can tell you that the people I know still serving are *very* unhappy with the long time away from their families. If they weren't already close to retirement, they would have gotten out by now.

If Congress was sincere, they would withhold funds and force Bush to end this war.

While you did not ask a question, I agree with your statement.

Also, if you want to blow a Republican's head up ask them what they would do if a draft was instituted to bring up troop levels and their sons and daughters were eligible. See how fast the words will not serve and Canada come out of their mouths.

It's something like the Democrats promising to cut funds and end the war just to dupe their tree hugging base at election time, and then they do the responsible thing.

Those silly politicians!

You need to shutup. You're living in some kind of fantasy world thinking that democrats are a god-send or something and that their gonna save the U.S. from impending doom. Ok! Both parties suck! Both parties are failure! It's impending doom, open your eyes people.

Dear Americans, our government didn't fail us, we've failed our government. We're the ones that elected all the numnuts into their positions.
