If "zero tolerance" policies were appropriately applied, then all of those kids would have been suspended for being within the vicinity and instigating the fight. My only guess is that the VP did not suspend the other 3 out of fear of the school being sued and having unwanted publicity as a result. Or, it's possible, that the VP himself has deeply held biases. On the flip side, if you beat them to the punch and threathen the school with a lawsuit of your own, then the VP may look to settle.
Al Sharpton and other opportunists like him think that blacks, and only blacks, suffer from racism and systematic discrimination. They could care less for the grievances of all other ethnicities.

Schools use zero tolerance. This means that even though you defend yourself, you still get in trouble. I have also had to deal with this issue. Reverse though, my son is 1/2 Latin and the white kids picked at him.
He was in magnet (for over achievers, high IQ) school. I told him to ALWAYS defend himself, I also informed the school that I condoned him doing this. I would rather let him be suspended than to have him not defend himself. So, it may go on his school record, but I also made sure that the school record reflected why. So it did not hurt him and it kept him from becoming anyones doormat and being bullied.
No real need to bring up Sharpton and Jackson. Your comments on that only show the opposite of what you claim.
Ignorant people come in all colors.
Maybe listen to Bill Cosby's thoughts, now there is a man I really respect! God bless him!

No, of course not. Al could care less about equality or white people. He's out for attention for himself and his own.
But that doesn't mean whites (or anyone else who wants to join and stands for true fair play) can't form their own groups and protest situations. Probably something people should consider.
but more to the situation you've experience (which I too have experienced and I'm sorry for you and your son)
the system is stupid and idiotic. The school boards these days basically say you can not even defend yourself, you have to simply push away and try to remove yourself from the situation (not possible in your son's circumstance)
You should contest this if you feel strongly enough about it, my guess is you'll hit a buearucratic road block a mile long, but I salute you for bringing attention to the idiotic stance.
Their thinking is to simply punish whomever is guilty of physical violence, its the only way they think they can be fair and unbiased.
My personal opinion (that is if you're interested) your son did what he *had* to do. Otherwise he'd have been a target going forward. I hate to promote violence and I don't mean it to be taken that way, I just want to promote defending yourself, because bullies love and easy target and if they think you won't fight back they'll keep coming back for more.
I suspect if you do fight back -- you'll become too much trouble to bother with.

Take into account that your son possibly didn't tell you the whole story. I do agree that your son had the right to defend himself if he was in fear for his safety. I don't think Al Sharpton will be coming to defend your son, he thinks the only people who experience racism are African-American. You should appeal the suspension with the school board.

Sorry lacedoutmami you are just a bit too ignorant and you obviously never went to school. Your question "Since when is it against the law to fight in school" should be answered by the rules of conduct that the school hands out in the beginning of the year.
They were all wrong period, even for your son to fight back, Tilley. My son got suspended for defending himself and I totally understand why. Students are required to read and sign school rules in the beginning of the school year...point blank!!

Sorry, but all students physically involved in a fight usually get suspended. It isn't particularly fair, but that is how schools generally handle these things. It has nothing to do with race.
I would, however, recommend you file assault charges on this boy, as your son was only defending himself.

I'm sorry that happened to your son. Do school restrooms need to be equipped with closed circuit tv now? Your son was only defending himself & who wouldn't, especially since he was outnumbered & held against his will. I don't know what this world is coming to. Al is probably on vacation this week but maybe he'll send Jessie Jackson in his place. Yah, right!!

CALL THE COPS!!!!
They need to be locked up for attempted murder.
Trust me, your son is not being 100% honest with you.
If I got into a fight at school and had to fess up I would not give EVERY detail to my mother.
Sorry he is only human.
But if this is in the bathroom how did he get caught?

Your son is white! He's wrong, he cannot be discriminated against and probably offended the the attackers by using a facility in their territory.
Sorry, this is how the school views and deals with these situations.
Call the police and file assault charges against the instigators and name the school in the law suit. When you threaten their money, they'll cave

its obvious both boys were suspended for fighting the others weren't because they didn't throw any punches. and just because you and your son isn't prejudice doesn't mean that the African American boy and your son just didn't get along. would it make a difference to you if your son was jumped by 4 Caucasian boys??
