It may be different from state to state but here are a few reasons...mental incompetence, fraud (this can include leading one to believe that they would like to have children then finding out that they have no intention of ever having kids), under the influence of drugs/drug addiction, one party was already married, one party was under the legal age of marriage and without parental consent, if there is a blood relationship between parties, failing to reveal they have a sexually transmitted disease prior to marriage.

An annulment makes the marriage non-existant in the eyes of the church. Each religion has their guidelines. The annulment still needs to be filed with the courts to be a legal divorce.

My reason for filing in 1989 was that my husband was not who I thought he was and unfortunate for me, my church did not recognize our marriage... (catholic/methodist married in a courthouse) no annulment. I had to go through a regular divorce.
