It can vary widely, you'll have to look around.

On the cost effective end:

Peru State College in Nebraska online @ $130 per credit hour http://www.peru.edu

LSU has very reasonable tuition for online programs also.

U of Phoenix is $480 per credit ($15,360 per year before financial aid) and is too expensive IMO

Harvard is $37,100 for tuition in 2008.

There are two costs -- direct and indirect.

The direct cost is the tuition and is more than that of a reputable public university. University of Phoenix costs about $500 a credit comparable to over $15,000 per year. This is about what the average Harvard student pays (when you consider aid packages).

The indirect cost is that employers do not respect on-line degrees -- and this may cost you $10-20,000 per year in lost salary.

Go to a real school.
