This is somewhat related to the question of who should be the nominee. But not entirely.

Frankly, I am concerned that all of the Republicans' two or three major players have substantial drawbacks.

I like what I see of Thompson, philosophically, but he has yet to prove himself completely to me.

Then again, one could well say that ALL of the Democratic contenders are "minor players" when it comes to experience, and there are splits on issues in that party too.

I am concerned, though, that the Democrats are very organized, and the American electorate has a history of "taking turns" with the parties.

So, tell me what you think - who has the best chance of leading the party and keeping the White House?

I must say at the start I am not a Ron Paul fan. And I can't stop Democrats from answering, although that's not really my focus.

I don't want to be too pessimistic, but if you have good news please share it. I can't believe the country would vote for Clinton, but . . .

1) Thompson.
2) Huckabee.
3) Rudy.

Thomspon and Huckabee are more conservative than Rudy so that is why they are above him on my list. I wish they would be even more conservative, but no real conservatives are running (except for Ron Paul, and he is nuts).

I can only answer as the Liberal that I am. I am more interested in preserving BIG government than I am with the welfare of the peons. Afterall, we're the best and brightest and deserve this fine lifestyle. The people don't know what they need, they're too stupid. They need us geniuses to think for them and make those determinations. My favorite President, who I agree with entirely, can make an executive decision NOT to send checks to the elderly and wounded veterans (even though there's plenty of revenue for that). We must preserve the bureaucrats and ruling elite at all costs. The people will understand. They know that their rulers need to have a lifestyle that befits their station. In these trying times the peasants will need to tighten their belts....that's all.

Hopefully Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney will come up strong enough in the polls so that we can lend either one of them serious support for the Presidency. No others appear viable at this time except Giuliani.

Giuliani stands for "big city ways", including secularism and socialism, is a gun-grabber and is at least pretty soft on abortion, like all the Democrat candidates. He doesn't represent my ideals nor those of most conservatives, but we may have to support him as the "lesser of two evils" against whatever Democrat wins the primary.

As much as you probaly don't want to hear this, Ron Paul is the only electable candidate. To address the person that said Ron Paul won't win do you realize the statistics... how low the approval rating is for going into Iraq... Get a grip a pro war candidate will not win this election.. you want a republican in office, he has to be electable and meet at least somewhat of the views of the majority.. Look at the current ratings people want out of this war and are concerned with the economy... You are delusional if you think any republican besides Ron Paul will be able to beat Hillary..

Paul is a man with principles, Beside him, most of the Republicans look like charlatans, and the Democrats who are allowed on television and in the New York Times look like spineless cowards. They look like spineless cowards not because they favor peace (they don't), but because they refuse to stand up to Bush and Cheney. Paul stands up to Bush and Cheney. NOTHING is more powerful than that in today's politics, and he does it... I changed parties just to vote for this man.... Any other republican will not get my vote nor the majority.....

Ron Paul

he is the only true conservative we have running

wmcritter, you like to say he is nuts but you never say why you think that , none of our founding fathers would be elected in our system as it is to day , cause they say what is needed not what sounds good, the same with Ron Paul , he is not afraid to tell what is needed to get the country back on track.

where as all the other candidates gloss over the issues telling generalizations instead of what there view are. its to easy to tear people down who tell you there plan, that's why they do it , and then what they put in is nothing like they said they were going to do. and it is our fault for letting them do it

who thinks Hillary's health care is going to be a 9 page system like the one she put forward it will be bigger and more unobtainable than what she tried last time , and once again it will be our fault for letting her do it with out her going into specifics

vote Ron Paul 08

time for a real change

and vote 3rd party

the only wasted vote is for the status quo

I am a Ron Paul fan, so far on every issue except abortion he has hit the nail on the head and I agree with everything - get the government out of my business, and out of the business of other countries.

He's not in favor of abortion, but he also refuses the federal government the right to legislate it, making it a state or local issue, which I think is the correct answer.

Even Bill Maher and his audience loved him at his interview.

As a former Republican I can honestly say that Ron Paul is the only Republican who can save the party.
