For the longest time, my computer would not allow me to enter Setup or give me the option to go into Safe Mode. Through the advice of a co-worker, I unplugged the PC and popped out the CMOS battery and let everything reset. This brought back the ability to go into Setup, but still no Safe Mode. Does anyone have any ideas? I have a Dell Demension 4300, 512 MB Ram, Window XP HE.

Make sure you are tapping the F8 key before the windows splash screen starts. Depending on the machine, it may take numerous tries. You can also try holding down the shift key when it starts, but I have never had any success that route. Tapping F8 BEFORE you see the Windows XP splash screen works for me.

Safe Mode is for resolving problems (issues in computer speak). Unless you have a problem that requires going into safe mode, there is no real reason to do so - unless you are curious. XP won't work in the normal fashion in safe mode - just so you know.

I haven't had a problem (yet) getting into Safe Mode. I have seen some answerers advising "tapping" the F8 key. That didn't work for me. When I turn on the PC, as soon as I see that the system is checking memory, etc, and before it starts to load Windows, I press and continue to hold the F8 key. If you haven't been doing it this way, give it a try. It can't hurt!
