The HDD light is permenantly on.
It keeps making crunchy noises
My game had files mysteriously currupted, I tried reinstalling it from the files which are on my hd and it wouldnt work cos some of the files were corrupted.
I have had the hard drive for 3 years and I have never touched it or looked at it.
Could the reason for my corrupted files be HDD failure or are there other possible reasons?

its possible the drive is simply overheating. Try using a can of compressed air to clean out whatever dust is in your computer (a good idea in any case), but be prepared for further trouble. If its making a clicking sound that simply won't go away, you have a major problem. back up your data immediately and start shopping for a new hard drive. repeated BSODs (those annoying and infamous blue screens with error messages) are also a good indication of serious problems.

Your hard drive sounds like it's probably dying. Symptoms for hard drives dying are clicking noises.. You will also hear sometimes a powering up and down noise. I would recommend doing a scandisk or other equivalent hard disk utilty to check all your sectors. If it finds bad sectors I would replace it as soon as possible with a new hard drive before you have anymore data loss. In the future you should consider having a raid solution so that if you have a total hard drive faluire you can have another hard drive mirror the other one. This is a redundent solution if you have a data that is critical.

Have you done a virus scan recently?
If not, I'd recomend that you make sure you've got the latest virus definitions for you software and then run a full system scan.
It might just be some malicious software that is causing the probelms...
If not, back up what you can and get a new drive - they're pretty cheap nowadays.
Good luck!

Had this happen to me many times before, yep your HD is toast! Time to get a new one. Back up everything before you loose all HD functioning all together.

Yep, sounds like it.
NB. Most hard drives fail because they get too hot ... when you replace it, see if you can improve the air flow ...

3 years is a good run for a hard drive, but have you formatted it before?. try a format before you buy a new drive.
