rent an appliance dolly and straps first off...this is how they got it up the stairs when the brought it to you I am sure.
after you get the fridge/freezer on the dolly, wrap it in a blanket to keep it from getting scratched and then tie it down with racheting straps. Make sure they are very tight
Once you start down the stairs, you will have to go one step at a time, placing the wheels on the next step down as you go along....have the strongest person at the top holding and dropping the fridge each step and one at the bottom guiding it. Take it slow.

Switch it off a few hours before you move it. Wrap it up with a blanket or something suitable that will give it some protection against knocks. The rest is then muscle power, the more people you can get the better but remember to keep it upright.
I've bee told that the Gas can escape if you tilt them too much.
Once you get to the new location, again leave it to stand for a few hours before you switch it on again to let the gas settle.
Good luck.

first check the back of the fridge, simply look for an oval shaped copper bulge, this is the side you need to lay the fridge ,then bring in the muscle.when transported leave the fridge for a good few hours for the gases to settle.

All good answers, but when you reach the new flat, leave it unplugged for 24 hours, not a couple as some have said.Start using it before that time lag and you will be buying another new one.

me and my boyfriend lived on the 3rd floor and when we moved our fridge freezer out we did it ourselves too we just carried it (huffing and puffing) down the 3 flights making sure it was kept upright, im sure you will be told more tips and such but we managed to keep it upright the whole way and it works fine.

I just helped someone move one.
Please remember to take the measurements of the fridge and the doors your passing through.. You may just have to remove the doors of your unit.
Rent appropriate lifting straps and hire a couple of strong young men, oops or woman.
Don't do as my friend did - tried moving it without removing the contents.

Wrap it in bubble wrap and tie a rope round it so you've got something to hold it by. Where the stairs are straight, lie the freezer on its side and slide it down the stairs. Where the stairs wind, carry it upright.
When you get to your new place, leave it to settle for a day before you switch it on.

Strap it onto a large furniture moving "dolly." Your boyfriend will need more help than just his brother because you'll have to move it slowly....step by step. Someone will have to walk beside it to keep it from tipping over.

I would suggest using a dolly. That's how I move my washing machine and dryer down my stairs.
