A very successful director regardless of gender would wear whatever she pleases. Very successful male directors wear anything from jeans, a t-shirt and a hat to a nice suit. Don't try so hard or you'll look like you are. Wear what you feel comfortable and confident in or they'll smell the fear. If a beret fits into your personal style then go for it, but seeing as you spelled it wrong I doubt you have ever worn one before and it may feel akward when you wear it and therefore look akward, know what I mean? I honestly don't mean that as a put down, merely an observation. You also don't say what you're dressing for exactly. You're doing a play, but are you premiering it, are you directing it as in it's a day on the set, or is it a reading, or what? If it's opening night of course you wear something nice (a dress, a suit, or jeans and a great top and shoes depending on your plans after the show and of course the type of venue). If this is just a day on the set, you don't need to dress any specific way. It's your manner that will get you respect.
Best of luck to you!

A beret is a completely stereoptypical accessory for artists; I don't recall them being a symbol for directors. I suppose you could wear one just to differentiate yourself somehow. But the dress just doesn't look like something a power-person would wear to work.
Most male directors are going to be dressed for comfort, and that would probably apply to female directors too.
If I were dressing casually and yet still wanted to intimidate others with my authority and success, I'd wear black pants, a white shirt, expensive shoes that made me look taller, and some LARGE diamond stud earrings. Multiple rings. Maybe some sunglasses. And you could always use a clipboard or megaphone as weapons.
Hasn't your director given you any input about costumes?

The dress in your photo looks like it doesn't fit properly. Wrong shoes. A very successful director would probably wear a more Power Suit outfit with flashy accessories. And sensible shoes by Gucci.

This is a hard stereotype to nail down, but I think the standards change from television directors to movie directors to theater directors. Most theater directors I know are a bit more flamboyant, but more like head-scarves and big jewelry than berets. In film and television, most of the ones I know wear a lot of casual, dark colors while working on set.

I kinda depends on the attitude of the company. I've had directors show up in ripped jeans and a t-shirt.
Then again, I've had directors show up in full business attire.
Go in something that you'll be comfortable in but isnt' too extreme in either direction and you'll be just fine. (Also keep in mind that a beret does have certain stereotypes associated with it.)

a beret might be a bit overkill...think artsy yes, but also no-nonsense professional used to taking butt and kicking names. the dress is good, but perhaps instead of sandals maybe go with some funky pumps, maybe put your hair up - play around with some other accessories.

If it's a comedy, where the beret. If not, wear something casual that looks expensive.

i might say some variety of sexy undies. Like pantyhose, fishnets or stockings and severe heels. Like this one guy reported and that i believe him, it leaves something for the mind's eye.
