My contractions were never regular - even when I was pushing. If you cannot talk and/or walk through the contraction, then you want to get to the hospital.

Basically severity will come as the labor progresses,I personally stayed home for 12 hours in labor until the contractions were 5 minutes apart. Labor and birth is different for each woman...Even for first timers, timing contractions is imporatant to determine if labor has begun.
If you feel a contraction notice the time and if another one happens notice the time, if a pattern sets up then you know or if your water breaks. If I say anything I say this just be mindful
of your body, and if you are not sure GO TO THE HOSPITAL!

Looking back on it, I kinda feel stupid. I was having back pains and cramping, and never realizing it, those were probably my contractions. I didn't actually worry about going to the hospital until my water broke. But it didn't actually break all the way, just a leak, so they still had to break it at the hospital. I would pay more attention to frequency, not severity, cuz the pain, or lack of, is different for everyone. When the pain becomes constant, I think you should seriously consider calling and going to the hospital. Even if the baby is not coming right this second, it is sure to be soon.

If they are painfull at all you should time them...and if they get 5 mins or less apart and constant you should at least call your drs office and see what they want you to do....but I would suggest if they get under 5 mins apart to go to the hospital....
