Actually I was going to sat the first casualty of war is truth, but that's been quoted to death. Technically the war didn't start till after the archduke's death. Wikipedia has an entry for a John Parr who is considered the first British death, but this is way after the war started, and is probably more of a traditional legend than anything else.
