That's true, Mychal Bell may not be a saint, but it does not change that fact that he and everyone else is entitled to equal and fair justice under the law.

The outcry here is if you punish Jena 6 or anyone else for their roll in an assault, why aren't the white students who assaulted and hospitalized the black student on trial or in jail? (He was in the hospital longer than the assaulted white student)

What about charging Black Students who wrestle a shotgun away from a white student who was threatening them, with theft? (everyone I asked would have done the same thing)

So let's see no jail time or charges for any of the white students involved here (aside from a 3 day in-school suspension for hanging noses from a tree), while black students involved have spent months in jail and facing years of charges. Sounds like there's a case for unequal justice here..

I'm not even mentioning things like:
The "I could make your lives disappear..." threat by a law official (did he get charged) or facts like members of Bell's jury being connected to the prosecutor and the victim.

Because there's a lot more to the story then what the news reports in one place. Bell's criminal past or saintly clean past should have no bearing on the equal justice issue here.

Even the Free Jena 6 Now issue Bell has spent months in jail so I hardly call that scott-free. Maybe time-served is enough but equal justice should be a minimum for all.

Let's be very clear here. We are not looking at Mychal Bell's past criminal record. It does not pertain to the issues at hand. Let's remember that a black student was beaten before the white kid. The white kid was not that badly injured if he was able to attend a school function the very same evening. Also, if I was being threatened with a gun, I would have taken it away too. This is a culmination of many things, many incidences that have occurred in Jena. The town of Jena was a ticking time bomb. Does it bother anyone that there is still so much racism in this fine country of ours? We have a tendency to focus on the superficial things, and not go to the core of the matter. That is why so many people are rallying together to protest all that has occurred. I usually think that Sharpton and Jackson are sensationalists, but I support the Jena 6. They should be punished for beating up a kid, but SO SHOULD THE WHITE KIDS WHO BEAT UP A FELLOW STUDENT AS WELL!!!!!

I'm sorry, but you are racist and you reveal it the moment you ask why "black folks" can't take responsibility. If you had asked why "some people" or even "some black folks" can't take responsibility, that would have been different. As for Mychal Bell, as so many have already said, the punishment does not fit the crime. Especially when there are other kids walking around after having contributed to the situation. Attempted murder? When he was released the same day after treatment for "cuts and bruises?" And attended a public function later that day?

6 blacks beat up a white and get charge accordingly, Al Sharpton turns it into an issue of race. If 6 whites had beat up a black Al Sharpton would be pressing to have the entire town tried for Hate Crimes. The only racial issue here is the one that Al Sharpton is conjuring up. Racism is alive in this country, but it goes all directions. Black on white, white on black, black on brown, brown on white, white on brown, etc. 99% of the time its not a big deal unitl an outdated civil rights leader decides its going to become epidemic if he doesnt haave full influence on the criminal procedings. I do not condone these acts for any person, but let the criminal justice system take its course. The LA state court has already interjected. To date there has been no reason for anyone to interject; the justice system is working!

I agree that the 6 guys should be punished for the crime committed, but not attempted murder. I do not think that it was a fair fight at all (6 boys attacking 1 boy), but just as those 6 should be punished for their crime, so should the kids that hung the nooses from the tree. Intimidating a person or persons because of their race, ethnicity or religion is considered a "hate crime"! Also, I read the comment about "why can't blacks take responsibility for their actions?" I think that is an unfair question. Not all blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, ect... are alike. I take full responsibility for my actions and my husband and I teach our children to take responsibility for their actions.

Ok so what if he had a prior criminal record. Why is nobody saying anything about the WHITE PUNKS who pulled a gun out on these guys the night before, or the fact that they beat up a black guy at a party also they hung nooses from the WHITE tree. Why aren't they in trouble, bc they're WHITE.

They should be punished but not with attempted murder or sitting in jail for 7 months.

To be honest, they all should get the same punishment including the white kids. What's the prob?

these are likely the same protestors that openly cheered when OJ got away with murder.

Comparing this to Selma is an autrocity. Dr. Martin Luther King never promoted violence and would have not been a fan of the Selma 6 thugs.

The punishment should fit the crime. A murder charge for a butt whipping is completely wrong. The assault charge is not unreasonable and the lesson to the KIDS should be, "don't do it again!!". There is definitely abuse of the law here.

They should be punished but attempted murder!!!! WTF

Assault and disorderly conduct perhaps but not attempted murder. And it does smack of racism. Some white kid pulls a gun on people and nothing happens??? If I pull a gun on you would I be sitting at home right now? NO!!!

Punishments NEED to fit the crimes...period. And had the prosecutor thought with a law book as opposed to a racial outlook none of this would have happened.

Why can't white people take responsibility for their youth? Pick a school shooting.
