Sure, if it's the same ttype and speed.
Addling slow memory to fast memory makes it all slow, if it works at all.

When you goto a site like Kingston Memory, you can use their selection and configuration guide.
Crucial.com has a GREAT set of online guides.
When you give them enough info like the brand of model of your PC, the current memory configuration, they can give you the available memory upgrade options.
Can you use your old memory to upgrade? Usually not. Fortunately, memory is CHEAP.
Good luck,

see what speed each memory and what type they both are. It will work if both types are the same but if they are different speeds then the system will run at the slower of the two speeds.

Yes it should. Your RAM's speed will be limited to the slowest RAM module. If the 1GB module is PC3200 and the 512MB module is PC2100 then you will reduce your system RAM to the speed of the PC2100.

Same speed and type? , then go ahead. Are you running the 1GB in dual channel??? (2X 512MB sticks), if so then NO I wouldnt add it.
If you are just single channel, then yes.
Check your motherboards specs the see if you support dual channel or not.
