My 3 month old son has been really showing a preference for his left hand. He reaches out for things with his left hand. He mostly always puts his left fist in his mouth. Does this mean he'll be a lefty? I know it's a bit early, but so far he's showing a left sided preference....

My son seems to be right handed! he reaches for everything with his right hand .. so it's very likely that your son could be left handed.
here's a couple pictures I just took of him (yesterday and today .. just thought I'd share :)

Hi, I think that is too young to really tell for sure .. My daughter did things mostly with her left hand for the longest time..and then around 2 or 3 she used both or picking up things and playing..BUT when ever she colored for wrote her name she used her right hand.. AND NOW she is 6 and is still right handed..

The link below talks more about this.. it said that as early as 18 months you can sometimes tell for sure..

But who knows he might end up being left handed. I have 3 brothers... My second oldest brother and I are both lefties... BUT nobody else in our family is..

Could be. It shouldn't take long before preference becomes clear. Once he starts holding stuff (like sticks, toys, etc.) you'll know better; writing and handling eating utensils is the most clear indicator.

One thing to keep in mind if you have a lefty -- in early school, it can seem tough for the child to learn to use scissors and some other stuff... this is because it's typically designed for right-handers! Make sure that if your child is a lefty, the teachers know.

I'm a lefty and had to spend pre-school and kindergarten using scissors that would cut less effectively because my left hand's angle of closing would make the scissor blades spread apart when I tried to cut.

I do not want you to worry, but showing an early preference for one hand or the other can be a bad thing. Now many babies will use one hand for a week or two and then move to the other hand. But if your son is consistant for longer than a month I might ask my pediatrician.

"If your baby seems to be using one hand exclusively before she's 18 months old, however, talk to your pediatrician, as early hand dominance may be a sign of motor development problems."

It is possible but at this age most babies are ambidextrous. Don't encourage either way and just let nature take its course. You will know when he starts to self feed and later for sure when he starts to color and all that. My son actually showed a preference for his right hand around Jackson's age and still at 8 months does. It may mean he is going to be a lefty but its still a little early to tell =)

Yes. or he might be both. My six yr old it's a lefty and she's been a lefty from birth. She reached for everything with her left hand and she is still a lefty.

there's a hazard that your son ought to grow to be a lefty. whilst your son is two or 3 he might practice a call to the hand he would be making use of. some can wait till college age (5 or 6). Examples: My grandparents - the two perfect handed Their infants (one among that's my dad) - all left handed. Me, my sis and bro - all perfect handed My infants: Oldest - perfect handed, middle - left handed waited till he grow to be in kindergarten to compliment he needed to apply his left hand, Youngest - nonetheless up interior the air considering he merely grew to become a million and he's making use of the two. look at the infant middle article approximately this.

It's usually too early to tell. Around 6 months you'll have a better idea.

Do you have a Parents as Teachers program through your local school district? It's a great way to keep track of your baby's development. Someone (an acting/former teacher)will come to your house and do different tests (dexterity, speech, etc.) to make sure that your baby is developing as he should.

it sounds like he's a leftie.
Our little man (now 4 1/2) showed a strong left hand preference when he was young, like yours. He still does almost everything left handed, occasionally 'trying' the right, but ultimately going back to his left, and he's much more adept at things with his left.

no they are still learning and it is normal they wont determain their preferance for a while yet my son was over a year before he make the chice they have to see which hand preforms better for them and what they use that hand for

At 3 mo there isn't even much dexteraty yet so its just simple grabiing anyway wich anyone can do either handed
