Hi Curious
I can understand your shock at watching the video.
However, what is the answer. We could stop slaughtering unwanted ponies, but who would pay to feed them.
The rate these are being bred and bought by the affluent in this country, is creating a regular turnover for the butchers.
If there was less demand then there would be less slaughter.
If is therefore a "class" problem, those who have, are creating misery by wanting to have more.

The pictures did not shock or hurt me. I worked in the farming industry many years ago. If you want to be shocked then go to an abatoir and actually see what goes on.
To humans animals are just a commodity. They make money from animals for food, products such as dairy produce etc. Once the animal is too old it is destroyed because it will not be viable to keep it anymore. Horses have only a limited life. They are great to own but damned expensive to keep when something goes wrong. Ex racehorses are of no use to anyone, there are too many for a start. It is the same with dog racing.
Your asking can we put an end to this. The short answer is no. In the dairy and fatstock industry alone people demand good produce at a good price. The supermarkets drag the prices lower because of competition.
What I´ve written is just the tip of the iceberg so to speak. If you take this question to the next level, to do with hunting then you have the same only worse.

Whilst not advocating the fact that these ponies are being sent for slaughtered by people because they are no longer wanted, just look at these picture coldly. The animal was slaughtered in the humane way that is laid down by law, it was first shot in the brain with the "bolt gun", then a probe was inserted into the brain. The spasms that were made whilst the pony was on the floor were normal twitchings of the nerves. The animal was killed instantly !

It's an economic fact, not a "nasty disgraceful carry on".
Unlike yourself (I suspect) I've had the experience of being at an abattoir when animals were slaughtered.. There was no fuss, no drama, and certainly no suffering or cruelty.
And as for your "why should a healthy animal be slaughtered". It's to eat. I wouldn't want to eat a diseased animal...

Hi,i have been told by people that horses were slaughtered for meat.i would not believe it has there is lovely horses on the field out my back they disappear some times they come back.I am ashamed that the human race has stooped so low yet I wonder how long it has been going on & what other animals are being slaughtered.I have stopped eating meat has I do not trust what they sell. There seems to be no laws covering the meat trade infact theres hardly any laws for the food they sell. The only way for it to be stopped is by everyone not eating meat.It would force them into action.

I can't bring myself to click on your link and will use my imagination instead (have had enough of being sad recently!!) I have had 3 horses/ponies and they were all rescued and they have all left us dead.. (old age I hasten to add) I adore horses and ponies and would love to get more, but until I am in position to give a horse a good proper home I keep away... they are the most beautiful creatures on this earth, and when we look at the worlds history we owe them SO much.. to use abuse and eat these kind willing animals is a absolute sin...

This is not new its been going on since the 70s all over England just go to a horse auction and your see it happening. This comes from over breeding, at least it died quickly but who know how much suffering was caused in getting to the abattoir?

Don't buy any horse byproducts. find out what is made from horse and make your decision. Maybe the horse transportation will make a full recovery and come back, which would solve the oil consumption and even bring back the home town stores to a smaller community again. I think the children will have the chance to grow healthy again..

Having lived in Holland where they eat horse meat on a regular basis i can tell you that it is actually very nice, you should give it a go and spend more of your time worrying about the hundreds of thousands of humans that are dying needlessly every year

Sorry, I love horses and can't look at the link, I went to an auction once, and that was bad enough.
I've been upset for so long when I saw one about children screaming and crying as they were being torn out of their mothers arms by a dozen police officers that I couldn't cope with horses too.
Good for you though.
