People should know the importance of trees! They provide us with oxygen. Help prevent slides in mountains. Provide us with shade. In addition, it decorates earth with all its green leaves, without them the earth would seem like a desert, and i dont think we could survive there. But not only are we, humans, in danger but so are the animals, they need a place to live in and eat and reproduce. My moral is stop being selfish, think of others !

Wow. That's one of the most uneducated, brain washed things I've ever heard. Why don't you learn a little more about a subject before you start complaining? Did you know that a forest regenerating from a harvest produces much more oxygen (faster growing, i.e. more photosynthesis) and sequesters more carbon than an old growth forest? And many animals need the dense growth created by a regenerating forest, or the brush left over from a harvest, in order to have a place to hide from predators and survive. Not to mention the fact that we need to cut trees in order to produce many of the things that we depend on in our lives (many of which I'm sure that you use). And they grow back.

.......and there are more acreage of forested land in America today than there was when Columbus came over. We aren't running out of trees. They are a renewable resource.
The above answer on carbon sequestration is right on. It is actually beneficial to the environment (as far as green house gasses go among other things) to harvest trees and plant new ones. Another environmental advantage is that there is more biodiversity in a recently clear cut stand than there is in an old growth forest.
I agree with your screen name. Trees are good. And many good things come from trees. The only valid argument that can be stated for not cutting trees is purely emotional. Beauty and specific wildlife species are not the only benefit a tree offers. They provide timber, pulp for paper, recreation, beauty, erosion control, etc. As foresters we manage the land to provide all of the uses that land can provide.

The reasons for trees being cut down partially or whole:
1. Exposed to fungus, mold and mildew deteriorating the tree.
2. Infested by insects.
3. Demand for wood to create furniture, paper products, boxes, (there are alternatives such as recycling) or construction materials.
4. Considered as an obstacle or a danger of falling in residential neighborhood.

Let's see. Some of the reasons I know people cut trees include - someone needs the wood, the tree has died, the tree roots are destroying something that is considered more valuable, the trees are in the way of construction, the person didn't like trees.

My only complain about people cutting tree is that they don't know how to do it properly. I am talking about people prune their tree in their yard and leave only a big trunk standing like a totem pole! So many people think it'll come back and grow again, but it is not the case. The tree will only produce suckers. Cutting tree like that is a death sentence to the poor tree. It is ugly and waste of tree and your energy, too. Do it the right way, or leave it alone.

I have a huge sugar maple tree hanging over my house. Should I tear my house down and let the tree live, or should I cut down the tree and keep my house? Oh, these humans are in danger from that tree. What "other techniques" do you recommend?

I'm not sure what other techniques to cutting trees there are. I too am a tree lover but I realize they have a job to do as a renewable resource. With proper management they can serve man and beast. RScott

The good news is that as trees are cut down, new ones are planted in their place.
