A friend of mine owned a puppy, a poodle to be exact. I had they very social dogs and love attention but my friend was always busy at school so it usually stayed at home alone the only human contact it had was when it got feed or washed. It just died this morning and she feels really guilty because she didnt give it enough attention. Do you think it was lonely and died of a broken heart or was it just sick and no one knew?

Only way to tell for sure is to bring the remains to the vet and have an autopsy done. Yes, you are right, poodles are a very social little animal and they need a lot of love and affection. I don't think that was the problem unless she outright neglected him. Poodles also have a delicate constitution and if she wasn't being as attentive to her pup as she ought, she may have missed some signs of her pup being sick. Listlessness, not drinking, mostly sleeping, lethargy..these are signs in a pup that require immediate attention.
I am so sorry that she lost her pup. Give her a big hug for us all her at Yahoo.

Dogs would not die from being home all day alone. Many dogs have owners who work all day (like me) and they do just fine. I suspect your friends dog had an underlying health problem that went unnoticed. Was it seen regularly by the vet? On heartworm prevention? Checked for intestinal parasites? Current on vaccinations? Most dogs just want to be with you. I'm sure your friend was not gone from home 24 hours a day. The dog would have been with her at meal times and at night while sleeping. This still counts as "human contact time" to dogs.

I have owned a cockapoo for 11 years and he is extremely attached to me. If I have to leave him, even if my hubby is home he sits in the window and mopes until I get home. I have had to leave him for several days at a time with people he knows well and likes but I'm told he doesn't do so well. My normally happy energetic dog stops eating and loses interest in everything.
My hubby swears Toby would die of a broken heart if something should happen to me and suddenly I wasn't around anymore. I think it is possible.

dogs can die of being along too much. they need attention just like anyone else so if you don't have the time then don't get an animal.
