When I traveled to Japan I used the Lonely Planet book. It was very good and helpful and had some great suggestions.
They also include some key phrases to know in Japanese in the back of the book.

As for the electronic translator - check out this site: http://www.mindconnection.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=LANG-JAPANESE

It is quite pricy, but if you really want one and need one before you go, then it might be worthwhile to check it out. These are pretty good electronic dictionaries/translators.

On the otherhand, if you can wait until you arrive in Japan, you can find these kinds of translators for more than half the price! and I can almost 99% guarantee you that they are probably better!

Have a safe trip!

I think the best "denshi jisho" are the ones made by Canon. You can turn the interface into English and you can combine kanji in the jump function to get the correct KOJIEN.
