The answers below are correct, but this is the right one. The computer mouse is called a mouse because not only does it have a 'tail' like a mouse, but it ACTS like a mouse, searching here and there, back and forth, like a mouse sniffing out bits of food.

Just want to correct a credit injustice: the mouse was developed by Xerox for their Alto machine in 1973. Steve Jobs later saw it and "adopted" it for the Lisa in the 80´s.
