I think Gabriel works really well for either sex. I know lots of guys named Gabe and it sounds to me like a nice, strong, simple name.

However.... if you ever use this name for a girl, PLEASE do not call her "Gabby"!

Your brother's son, right? WHY is the priest making all these suggestions???
Gabriel is much nicer than Clarie. My brother in law's name is Gabriel - everyone calls him Gabe - it works

I like the name Gabriel for a boy. It's nice for a girl but it should be spelled Gabrielle. I do not like the nickname Gabby. Gabe is ok for a boy.

Gabriel is a great name, but I don't like the nickname Gabe. Why would you be naming your brother's child?

Gabriel (Gay-bri-ul) is a boy's name. I love this name. I love Gabe as a nickname too. Gabrielle would be the girl's name. I think it's a very nice name.

Gabriel is the name of one of the 3 Arcangels in the Bible, as I am sure the priest has told or mentioned to you. The angel Gabriel is probably best known as the messenger angel- he appears in both the Old and New Testaments numerous times. It was he who told Mary that she would have Jesus, who reassured Joseph of Mary's fidelity, brought the news of the Lord's birth to the shepherds, warned Joseph in a dream of Herod's plot to kill Jesus as a child and told him to flee to Egypt, and spoke to Zachariah to let him know that Elizabeth would give birth to John the Baptist.

Giving a baby boy the name of the angel is a great idea- and for a girl, the name changes only slightly to Gabrielle. Both names mean "messenger" or "speaker". St Gabriel is known as the"beloved one" because of his acts of kindness and mercy. ( I learned this when I was studying for my confirmation about 7 years ago- the subject of choosing a patron saint came up in one of our discussions during class.I ended up choosing St. Michael, one of the other Archangels, as my patron saint. He is known as the "esteemed one" for his acts of bravery and compassion on behalf of the Lord. )

All of the angels have their own feast day- it is September 29th. They are also honored at the begining of the Litany of the Saints, whenever it is recited or sung. I think naming a baby for one of them is a wonderful idea. Hope this helps.

Humm...I know a Gabriel and he is a guy, but he is hung up on the archangel complex. Technically it means "God is my strength", so unless the family is really religious I would stay away from it...references to the archangel are bound to be made heavily throughout the child's life.

I like this name, but be aware, as he gets older, he may be called "Gabby" as a nickname.
