The 'war' was 'won' in 18 days. The occupation was lost the day after the war was won. The Bush Junta is like a dog chasing a car, once the dog catches the car the dog has no idea what to do with it. We now have the car......Bin Laden thinks he's won.....Bush has no idea what to think....everything we do in the future is going to be wrong. Meanwhile the OPECers are still thinking about selling their oil for Euros......how the hell are we going to get our hands on enough Euros to keep importing oil? Oil is now over $80.00 a barrel...Add another $13.00 to that if we have to pay in the Euros we're not going to have. Maybe some reporter could ask Bush about that the next time he gives a press conference...don't count on it!

Bush did not have the same coalition his father had, but not because we were not going to share the spoils of war, but because it was manifestly obvious to most of our partners in the first gulf war that the situation did not warrant an invasion.
It should have been obvious to the administration too.
But that is not why the war is a failure. It is a failure because they did it on the cheap to preserve their precious tax cuts (all the while increasing 200 years of accumulated debt by 50% in just 6 years). It is a failure because of abysmally poor planning and the outrageous hubris we exhibited in a pathetic attempt to terra-form a democracy in a lawless place with no tradition of it.

Regardless of the morality and underlying motives, I think you'd want to search further back, toward the assessment by General Shinseki.

I don't think the neo-cons see the war as lost at all. I think it's messier than they would like, but otherwise, right on target....they are still on track to control the oil and they are still pursuing a war without end which is an endless flow of money to military contractors and suppliers. And it's in line with Bush's Armageddon, Christian, fundamentalist scenario.

Simple to rebut.
The war started to turn bad when Bush listened to the bleeding heart left and tried to fight a war without casualties and stopped the shock and awe (which was working amazingly well)
It continued to spiral down hill for a long time due to Bush trying to fight like the pu$$y libs wanted him to.
When the troop surge started, and every since, the success of the war has been improving by the day.
