Really good answer from Erin M.
The time line CNN has on this last night, was excellent, Erin M. only left out one part of the time line, the incident where a black man 26 years old attacked a black teen with a bottle, (a bottle) and received probation. Not a sneaker, people a bottle. the laws are unjust, period. If the school had expelled the white students, who hung the nooses from the so called white tree, that incident would not have escalated to this.
I find it ironic that the only solution the high school could come up with was to cut down the tree. This was handled poorly.

The supporters of Jena 6 should not be fighting for the charges to be dropped against these students, but rather for fair punishment to be given to the other offenders.
The words that come from a person's mouth give no man or woman the right to lay their hands on them. This is meant to be a civilized society and violent citizens should be put in prison.
It is quite possible that the Jena 6's actions were violent enough to warrant these charges whereas the other situations were not as severe.

I just watched the video and read a couple of articles about Jena 6, including one from Fox News
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,297406,00.html
It's sad to know that there is still racism and hatred of people for no good reason. I think the point is equal justice. Those white boys who hung nooses in the "white tree" at the school should have been expelled and there shouldn't be a "white tree" anyway. The school should cut the damn tree down if students are going to use it as a racist platform.
The 6 black guys who beat the white guy are just as wrong. I don't think Dr. Martin Luther King would have approved at their violence in handling the situation.
Sounds like the world needs to examine what is going on in Louisiana and call it for what it is -- a crying shame and let's equal the scales of justice and demand it.

To tell you the truth, I wish no news networks touched this story. It has gotten blown way out of proportion. I agree with LSU. If you don't live here, you have no clue of what it is like here. If 6 white kids beat the crap out of one of us, I doubt your opinion would be the same. Jena is a good town and an excellent place to grow up. I have many white friends from my school days and I hate that this unfortunate incident is portraying my home like some backwards, pre-civil rights, hell hole. It is not. Today there is about 10,000 people here already. They need to get the hell out of our town.
EDIT!
Erin M- Did you actually tell people to get the truth from a computer? Do you live in Jena? Well I do. You do not have a clue what you are talking about. It really makes me mad when people like you think they know everything because you have all the appropriate information gathering devices. You are a complete and utter fool. Come down here and get the real story first hand you nit wit.

The question isn't whether or not the young men who jumped on the white kid were wrong. Frankly, I think the white kid begged to be jumped on, continuously referring to the black kids as the "N" word, but still, for them to beat him unconscious was wrong. But, hey, he did deserve a good beating simply because his parents apparently failed to do so. What the real issue here is, however, that there were beatings of black kids by white kids prior to this in Jena. One white kid threatened another black kid with a shot gun and nothing happened to that white kid, but when the black kid took the gun away, he was charged with theft of the gun!! GIVE ME A BREAK! That white boy was fine, he went to a function the same night he was beat, so he wasn't that messed up. Attemped murder is TOO MUCH. Maybe they should serve a little time, but so should those white kids who attacked black kids FIRST. IT'S ABOUT FAIRNESS!

all and sundry knows with regard to the nooses around the tree and the 6 boys beating up the newborn, yet what's gettin omitted is what exceeded off between those activities. there replaced right into a black newborn that replaced into beat up at a party by employing a white person and the white person replaced into charged with user-friendly battery and replaced into positioned on probation. then there replaced into the ease keep incident- 3 blacks had a gun pulled on them which replaced into taken faraway from the white boy, then the blacks have been charged with theft of a firearm, 2d-diploma theft and traumatic the peace. the white boy who had the weapon wasn't charged with something. i think of what maximum folk are status up for is equivalent rights. what the black infants did replaced into incorrect and can be in difficulty for it. yet why wasn't the different infants charged for what they did? it is the genuine question

As one who spends 5+ hours a day researching both past and present US news/history, I am sick and tired of reading posts and comments from anyone who obviously have not done their homework. It benefits no one to read these UNINFORMED posts.
No one denies that a crime was committed when Justin Barker was beaten. That IS NOT THE POINT. I repeat, it IS NOT THE POINT. Here is what happened. And please don't take my word for it. LOOK IT UP FOR YOURSELF.
-black student asked to sit under the 'white kids' tree (????)
-after he sat under tree, 3 nooses were hung, and dismissed as a prank
-a lot of black students sat under the tree
-district attorney came to speak at school and faced ONLY the black students (yes, blacks sit on one side of the room and white sit on the other) when saying 'i can take away your life with the stroke of my pen' (um nooses??)
-a fire was started at the school (unsolved)
-a MAN pulled a shot gun on black students in convenient store & the STUDENTS were CHARGED with theft of firearm when they wrestled it from him (why did he have the rifle in the store in the first place....hmmm?)
-a BLACK student was BEATEN by a GROUP of WHITE students for showing up at a party all whites (whats that about being a coward). Only ONE WHITE received PROBATION and was ASKED to APPOLOGIZE
-the next day the BEATEN BLACK STUDENT was taunted and called ****** repeatedly by JUSTIN BARKER, which eventually ended in his BEATING by the 'JENA 6'.
-THAT NIGHT JUSTIN BARKER WAS SEEN AT A SOCIAL FUNCTION
-Mychal Bell (16 at the time) was originally charged as an adult with 2nd degree attempted - MURDER & CONSPIRACY (what like he knew they were going to taunt so he planned ahead?)
-bail for all jailed 'Jena 6' was set between ($70,000 - $130,000; UNHEARD of for a school fight)
-the adult charges against Mychal Bell were reduced and then dismissed, and it is suspected that charges will now appropriately be brought in JUVENILE court HOWEVER he still remains LOCKED UP, almost a WEEK since charges dismissed. (sound okay to you?)
You owe it to yourself to educate yourself on matters before you make yourself appear ignorant and foolish. How dare you speak badly of someone without understanding the whole story. Yes, the blacks responsible for beating Justin should be punished, just like the white students are/were for their beating (for which there is no alledged motive other than hate). The WHITE MAN should be charged for his crime, as well as the BOYS who hung the NOOSES. IN ADDITION, all in authority should be held criminally responsible their unlawful and unjust actions. These include but are not limited to the Judge, both Defense and Prosecution attorney(s), Superintendent, and the Principal.
TIP TO ALL: Don't take what you see on TV to be gospel. You have a computer don't you? =) Use it and get the truth. There's plenty to be found, but it won't come looking for you. What can you find?

The white people who hung the nooses should be expelled from this Country. The young black males who acted like two-year-olds in the face of a despicable racist act ought to get probation and counseling... And their parents should wip their behinds until you can see red in the black a_s..

Racism DOES cross ALL lines. For years, TV and news print media paint BLACKS as being VICTIMS of racism.
Now, it's evident--and deserves equal media attention--that BLACKS can be as racist as whites. It's a lose-lose situation for all.
Jena 6 committed a crime NOTHING can excuse their savage act by beating a white student. Jena 6 parents also stand to be sued for the violence spawned by their JUVENILE sons.
What should Jena 6 supporters hope for?? Here's a hint: You can't sue a prison inmate..........

Hanging a noose is not assault. It's mean and degrading, but it's not assault. I think a better question would be:
If this crime were reversed... a bunch of white kids beating up one black kid... would it be considered a hate crime?
