On October 12, 1997, John Denver was killed when the Long-EZ aircraft he was piloting crashed just off the coast of California at Pacific Grove, shortly after taking off from the Monterey Peninsula Airport.

Well as you can see by the abundance of answers, he's dead of a plane crash in 1997. What really upsets me is that Sonny Bono died in a ski accident with a tree! I could see John sailing into the woods and crashing in to a tree, but Sonny Bono? Oh my gosh. I just want him back! Life has been tragic ever since! I loved Sonny!
