I'm a huge Stephen King fan, but unfortunately, I don't scare too easily. I saw some of the other answers and have to agree with some. "IT" is in fact a scary movie, because it plays on childhood fears of not being able to share your problems with the adults in your life. Aside from that, clowns (or anyone else in disguise) are just creepy. "Cujo" is scary and your other answerer is right not to read the book for fear of being afraid. The book is far more sinister. In fact, I was disappointed when I saw the movie because one of the survivors was actually meant to die in the book. "The Shining" is a scary book, but that Shelley Duvall in the movie holding a baseball bat at the wrong end adds a laugh factor that takes away from the scare. I must say that the scariest Stephen King movie has to be "1408", but only because of the alternate ending. The ending not chosen gives the plot an entirely new direction. However, this is not the overall best King movie made. My personal favorite is still "Stand By Me" closely followed by "Dolores Claiborne".

The Shining (original with Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall) creepiest line for me was when the twins are standing in that hallway with that horrible carpet "Come play with us, Danny. We'll play forever, and ever, and ever". The book is actually 10x's scarier, but the movie is good.

CARRIE is still number one. I will never forget the first time I saw that ending, when the hand comes up out of the pit and grabs Amy Irving's arm...I really think it was the first time I actually wet myself a little in a theater!

I dont think Stephen King books translate very well to movies, I much prefer to read his books than watch then. As for scariest - I think "IT" was brilliant (I never did like clowns) and "Misery" was great tension.
