The green dot is the result of a new rule in effect for the 2007 NFL season. The green dot helmet indicates that the helmet is wired with a radio for calling in plays to the quarterback.
Apparently, the green dot rule was instated because the league felt offensive teams had an unfair advantage on certain plays because they could call in a new play at the last second.
My guess is that it has to do with someone complaining about someone else cheating.
Imagine this “hypothetical” scenario and you’ll see why this rule was created: It’s the 4th quarter. 10 seconds on the clock. The quarterback has a radio in his helmet. His team is down by 3 points. If the wide receiver or running back also has a radio in his helmet and the play is changed at the last second, THAT would be an unfair advantage. The defense’s fans are screaming like crazy. The offense can’t hear the quarterback, but the other player with the radio knows exactly what’s happening. Cheater!

It is a brainwashing device put there by the NFL to make people ask the same question over and over again.
Either that, or someone left the price tag on it.
