...what is it calculating when it has that damned egg-timer up for five minutes?

The computer is busy monitoring your blood pressure, galvanic skin esponse, and other "stress" indicators. the little egg timer will stay on screen exactly up to the point where the user is 1/10 of a second from throwing the computer out the window.

Its really just science!

It's cranking through the approximately eighteen million billion instructions that Microsoft requires Windows to execute in order to accomplish a task that actually requires about ten.

No matter how much faster your new computer is than your old one was, Windows will evolve new and exciting ways to make it seem just as slow as the the one you had fifteen years ago.

This is in order to maximize your computing experience, in some way, or something.

calculations it makes that much per second is simple calculations. In a program, your computer have to process billions of simple calculations, so that what happens

they don't make that much calculations. the super computer right now can only process 3 billion tasks per second. its capable of doing that, it doesn't mean its constantly doing that.

But your computer is doing so many things, and sometimes it is waiting on slower, peripherals to respond, such as input devices, drives, or a response from the internet.

But I get your point.

Move up to a Quad Core CPU if you really want to see a computer handle many things quickly...
