I'm learning English. Is there any subtle difference between "girl" and "gal"???

The first answer accurately defines the difference between "girl" and "gal" in standard American English usage. Gal was used during WWII and is sort of a counterpoint to "fella" for a young unmarried male.

For a quick definition, 'Girl' would be a little girl, not yet mature. "Gal' would be a unmarried woman....Gal was used very much during the 2nd World War and was a nice, tender term for a 'girlfriend' or a gal that was available to be a girlfriend.
