I.e., what's so useful about resolving forces? Because a force is a vector; it has magnitude and direction. An example of the use of resolving is, if you want to add or subtract two force vectors you can't just add the two magnitudes unless they happen to be in the same direction. The easiest way to add them is to resolve them into two perpendicular axes and add the components in each axis.
