Hi,

I had to delete my existing windows xp as there was allsorts of problems with it, and install a fresh xp using the CD that came with the computer.

Now that i have installed XP there are drivers missing.

I cant connect to the internet, under the 'Network Connections' window there used to be a heading called "LAN or Highspeed internet" with our cable modem connection underneith, but now all it has is a heading which says "broadband connections".

I wrote down the properties of the connection a while ago, it appeared as "SiS 900" under the device manager, but it doesnt show up there anymore.

I have googled "SiS 900" and found a driver, will it be safe to download from another computer and install in on mine? Will this get the internet working??

Also our computer does not recognise any USB hardware. USB does not even appear under devices!

Whats going on?

helpp x

I think you will find, miss, that the problem with the computer in the first place was that the NTFS file was damaged, in that case.. I could not start windows up, so I had no choice but to start boot windows using the disk as there were no other options, so before you go around answering peoples questions, for extra points on your yahoo answers, please know the facts before acting like a smart ****.

My computer is now 3 year old.
The problem with the computer is that the drivers cannot be detected.
And please, do not comment on my job role as my IT role has not yet involved any sort of networking, but only Software just yet.

You should be able to get your machine running again with all the correct drivers. You will need to know what motherboard or what manufacturer built your machine. Then all you need to do is visit the website for the Motherboard or computer mfg and download the drivers for your computer.

Simply download them and burn them to a CD. Then take that CD to your machine and install them. (keep the CD so that should you need to set up again you have them). In most cases your computer should have come with the driver CD. However, many times that does not happen. Since the SiS900 says you probably have a motherboard with the SIS chipset (very common) you shouldn't have any trouble finding these drivers. If you can't find your motherboard (It should be printed on the board itself) you can use drivers on
http://drivers.com website (these will be safe).

Good Luck

You may need to take the system to the Geek Squad.

You are definitely missing drivers, or there are components that are burned out. If you were having a lot of problems, that could be the problem on recognizing the hardware. Or, you could have had a virus that really screwed up your system.

If you have an alternative access to the internet, then download the latest drivers -- these will fit on a diskette.

I use Repair Registry Pro to help keep my system cleaned up, but right now this one boots with the choice of two operating systems -- both being Windows XP. I just have not taken the time to backup all the data and wipe the drive.

Did you back-up your data before the reformat?

You should be okay to download SIS 900 and try it on your system -- if you have the device in your machine, then when you put the driver on it should recognize it for you.

Hi Lea
This is a bit of a problem for you right enough since you had to reinstall XP using your computer CD.

Was this a recovery CD supplied with your PC? If so it should have restored your computer to "factory settings"and put on all your drivers such as the graphics card, sound card etc. The trouble is if you installed stuff after you bought it like a printer or scanner or your hi-speed modem you'll need to have the driver software for these at hand to re-install them.

Concerning your USB devices, most USB devices are "plug and play" like a memory stick or a camera etc. But things like a printer and a modem need the install disk to load the drivers on with.

Check the disks you have and see if the drivers missing are available on them. Also, if you have a good mate or someone who works with PC's and IT - like me ha ha - use their computer to download the SIS driver from the SIS.com website and any other hardware drivers you need.

Let me know how you get on and email me with more info if you need help.

Ok, hope that helps and let me know how you get on.

It is not so bad. You are missing various drivers. To see what you are missing, right click on "My Computer" and choose "properties", then the "hardware" tab. The flagged devices are missing drivers.

Not any old drivers will do. Drivers for your machine can probably be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. Your immediate problem is that you are also missing your network driver.

On some other computer, go to the manufacturer's web site and find the support/downloads section. With any luck, you will find your model of computer, and the will have a network driver for you. Download that, save it to a thumb drive or burn it on a CD, cart it over to your computer, install it and viola!

Or call a computer repairman. I'm in the yellow pages.

I would suggest you try and re install or repair again and pay a lot of attention to the dialogues while doing so, normally all the things you mentioned should be on the recovery disc or with another disc that may have come with the computer, do you have maybe a disc that is for your mother board as the SIS 900 drivers could be on that and also the drivers for the USB, if all fails then you will have to find some one who is computer intelligent.

It's not that big a problem, you can probably download the utilities you need from the Microsoft website. There is a place in the bios that needs to be checked to enable your computer to recognize usb, but you may be able to find another way you may just need to reinstall the usb controller. I like the Cnet site, or download.com,also rocket.com for dll files. Don't despair, a computer is not as intricate as a car, and besides, if you have the ability to strip a car, you have leaned how to put it back together.

Lea, what brand of computer do you have? What's the model number of the computer too please?

If it's a custom built, who built it for you? What motherboard did they use to build it with?

If it's a brand name system like HP, Compaq, Dell, E-machines, Gateway, etc.
The drivers should be on a CD or DVD that came with the system, or they may be on a seperate partition of your hard drive that would appear as a D:\ drive on your system.

If it's a custom system, you may need to get support from the builder.

There are basically 2 groupings achievable: people who ignored 3 or greater questions, and people who ignored decrease than 3 questions. So, in case you realize that 4/10 belong in one team, all and sundry else (10-4)/10 = 6/10 = 60% belongs in the different team

Take your PC to a shop and have it repaired.

All of your questions above reveal you ignorance and really you've undertaken a job you don't have the skills for. If your car develops a problem do strip down the engine then phone a mechanic and complain that you cannot drive anywhere.

This sounds very harsh but you've re-installed Windows without any idea of what was involved and not generic USB devices are not being detected and your worse off than when you started. Quit while you're behind.
