Yes Imagination is becoming a thing of the past for the majority of us, paradoxically, this is because we rely on the imagination of some of the greatest minds. (Namely inventors and discoverers.) While imagination is something that is less appreciated in today's world of facts,it does still play a vital role in problem solving in this day and age.
I agree that a lot of the time, before we have the opportunity to discover an idea for ourselves, we instead seek a means for finding the answer elsewhere, and yes technology started as a means to make daily life easier, such as laborious work, but has penetrated too not only take over physically challenging work, but also just about every facet of cognitive function as well. (The last time you used a calculator when you didn't have too).
I also believe that children who rely on technology for their amusement is also detrimental to their imagination, what ever happened to the day when all a child needed was a couple of figurines to keep them entertained! ok those days still probably exist, but they are ending rapidly..

A concept is only original once within a shared context.
The more beings there are in communication, the more information is shared between them... and the more concepts they become familiar with as a whole. As such... any idea, which might have had the oppurtunity to be individually discovered by several individuals originally..... would only be discovered by the one and shared to the others.
Given that you live now in an age where information can be shared almost instantly all over the world..... and ideas are being discovered and used all the time..... it is safe to say the number of concepts that can be newly imagined is gradually being depleted.
That said.... the Universe we're in is vast on a scale no animal mind can comprehend... and the possibilities therein are likewise vast beyond our capacity to exhaust them.
Humans are generally just mentally lazy these days... essentially.

There is a season for everything. There is a time for pulling back on the slingshot or bow and a time for letting them fly. The lack of imagination will only lead to a hunger or appreciation of it and imo that is normal and healthy. Who will be in the right place at the right time to benefit from this?
Cheers!

It sure seems as if it's getting that way, doesn't it? But I think (at least, I certainly hope) there will always be a few who are capable of imagination, even if the vast majority aren't.

It seems to be. There is so much else to stimulate children these days. They really don't have to play "pretend" anymore. I wouldn't give up on the human race's imagination yet though.

Certainly not. There are enough day dreamers among us whose imagination runs wild.
