Go to CigarsInternational.com. They sell empty cigar boxes: decorative boxes (pretty words for empty cigar cardboard boxes) 10 for $10 and empty wooden cigar boxes 10 for $19.95
Also, don't forget to ask any friends who smoke cigars...If they purchase cigars by the box...they probably still have boxes sitting around. It's close to impossible for a cigar smoker to just toss empty cigar boxes in the trash...it's like throwing books and pennies in the trash...just can't do it...so you end up with a huge stash.
Also alot of local tobbacconists will give away boxes and/or sell them pretty cheap.

I recently went to my local smoke shop, asked if they had cigar-boxes; and they offered me a whole box full for free! (I took 2 big, and 2 small ones). I'm assembling a -seldom seen- six-string slide guitar with a Cuba 'Romeo and Juliet' cover. So maybe check them out. I hope you find a cool cigar box too!

If you happen to live in or near Saint Paul, Minnesota, Stogies On Grand, the cigar shop on Grand Avenue, just east of Lexington Avenue gives away both the wooden and cardboard boxes for nothing. You probably won't get any of the top shelf cigar boxes, as he saves them for us regulars, but you can surely score good solid boxes, if the brand names don't matter.

Oftentimes, cigar/tobacco shops will GIVE them away. Sometime, they charge a small fee. I recommend visiting a few local shops and asking directly.
To get the musty smell out, put a fresh dryer sheet in them and close the lid. Leave it for a few days. It will smell MUCH better after that.
Best of luck,
~M~
