Science and technology.

The increased standard of living, longer life expectancy, lower infant mortality rate, higher mobility, etc all came out of scientific research and technological development.

Our high population is only sustainable with high technology (we have much of what we need to solve the global warming problem if we're just allowed to use it). The higher standard of living that comes from technology does tend to reduce the population growth rate as well.

There's also the fact that many of the moral advancement our species has made were only possible by technology allowing for the elimination of whatever was immoral (slavery was largely solved by technology making it obsolete).

Overpopulation. Get rid of 2-3 billion people and a lot of the global warming and pollution issues will disappear. Get rid of 3-4 billion people and most of the famines will disappear. There are just way too many people crammed into certain areas that cause all the problems, most of them in future years will be coming from South and East Asia as well as Africa.

Overpopulation will lead to wars, especially over scarce food and water. At some point just the fact of overpopulation will lead to violence and conflicts, and millions will suffer brutal deaths, all from nothing more than overcrowding.

Population : The world that has made us can no longer contain us!
The reason there is so many people living sub-standard lives is because the earth doesn't have enough resources for us to live equally - compared to our quality of life

Religion. It's started more wars than any other factor.

The steam engine. Without it, there would be no Industrial Revolution. Most of us would still be serfs, working for a guy living in a castle.
