I would like to know this. I am due a baby in 3 weeks. I have said I will try breastfeeding my other half is supportive but other people say how can you have a baby sucking your tit? Which I think is a vulgar thing to say to a mother to be. Its ignorance among most people people need to get over it babies will always breastfeed.

It's mostly ignorance but a big part of it is that people don't seem to be able to separate the breast as a sexual part from what it was really intended to be - nourishment for babies. I nursed in public when it was necessary and sometimes I did hear comments, but you know what? I did what was best for my baby, who cares about everyone else? Besides I showed less skin when nursing then most of the girls running around the mall. People just need to get over it.

I don't know why some people get all offended by it. It's the most natural thing you could ever do. I breastfed my baby until she was 8 months old. When she got hungry, I would feed her no matter where I was. I got some bad looks from a few people, but I ignored them. I wasn't going to let her go hungry for what other people think!

I've gotta say, I've never noticed whether or not anyone's been offending or worked up by my breastfeeding. I've breastfed or pumped every single day for the past 11 and a half years, and I've done it practically everywhere...from the front desk of reception, the tram, the train, the bus, in restaurants, walking through shopping centres...it's never been an issue. I wish it was that way for every woman.

I think people who have never seen a woman breastfeeding think they will have it all on show. However 99.9% of times a woman feeds (in public) no one even notices. As usual those who know nothing about a subject are the ones that shout loudest.

Ignorance....plain and simple. It is as natural as breathing. No one thinks it's odd to milk a cow, but let a baby eat the way god designed things and you turn into a freak show.

Boobs are equated with sex in ads, social norms, TV..everywhere. By themselves they are just part of the body and breast feeding is part of life. Anyone needs to resolve such conflicts in their own mind and leave the women breastfeeding alone.

I know. I breastfed my baby for 6 months like I was supposed to, and I felt like a hermit, trapped inside my home. Why do boobs have to be so sexualized?? Feel my pain :(
