Was Adolf Hitler's family the only people with this surname? Also why did some of the Nazi war criminals get such "soft" sentences, at the Nuremberg Trials, such as 10 years in prison? And what happened to them after they where released?

Hitler had a nephew or cousin who lived in New York during the war and was very outspoken against the third reich. He made money off appearences and articles. After the war, when the concentration camps were discovered and there was a huge outcry around the world, he went into hiding. One very interesting piece of trivia is the original spelling of the name. Young Adolf was adopted in sorts by his mothers new husband, when they went to the Catholic priest to change his name officially to Hiedler, the priest spelled it Hitler as it was one of the three ways to spell this name. I simplified this greatly so look up the story. Some of the officials who proved not to have anything directly to do with the jewish solution, were given lighter sentenances for war crimes. The henchmen of the third reich were hanged, burned, and their ashes scattered in the wind.

I would very much doubt if there are any people with the surname Hitler. I think the name was assumed by Adolf anyway. Differing sentences were handed out at Nuremburg, depending on the perceived degree of culpability - just as differing sentences are often handed out by criminal courts to defendants named in respect of the same offence. One such was Hitler's architect, Albert Speer. He left prison on completion of his sentence and became rich writing books about his experiences with Hitler and the Nazi Party generally.

When a surname becomes negatively connotated, people tend to change it, and it dies out. However, years ago there was a World War I vet in my neighborhood named Homer Frankenstein. Today, everybody in town goes to his headstone to get their picture taken in their Halloween costume.
