I'm talking all time. Any song first performed by another artist successfully. I personally lean towards Dave Matthews cover of the Bob Dylan/ Jimi Hendrix song "All Along the Watchtower". There are many great ones though so throw some out there. I'll then put it to a vote.

Jonny Cash's version of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails is good - not as good as the original but stills gives me goosebumps.

I can think of several :~

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix {orig. Bob Dylan}

Gold Dust Woman - Sister Hazel {orig. Fleetwood Mac}

In A Broken Dream - Thunder {orig. Python Lee Jackson}

Word Up - Gun {orig. Cameo}

Nowhere Fast - Fire Inc {orig. Meat Loaf}
{the two versions of this song were both released at the same time. Jim Steinman wrote different verses for one}

Crystal - Stevie Nicks {orig. Fleetwood Mac}

Not A Second Time - Robert Palmer {orig. The Beatles}

You Really Got Me - Robert Palmer {orig. The Kinks}

For all of these songs {except the first one}, I love the original just as much - if not more! - than the cover.

It's not the best of all time, but I always like to give The Vandals recognition for their cover of Don't Stop Me Now by Queen. They did an excellent job.
