I am still a Republican. My family has been Republican since Lincoln. If you think republicans invented war, you're sadly mistaken. Sometimes it's necessary to defend this country, even if you don't like a particular policy, or even a particular President, because you have to look at the bigger picture of the consequences of doing nothing. I give Clinton credit for trying the diplomatic route-it failed, not because of Clinton, but because of Hussein-he had no intention of ever complying. If that madman had taken over the Mideast-the ramifications are enormous-the people would lose what progress they've made and be sent back to the stone age, riding camels again, while he'd be building new palaces for himself and rewarding his cronies, leaving the others to forage for themselves. If you think gas prices are high now, with moderates in charge, what do you think dictators will charge per barrel? And like it or not, our economy runs on oil, and it's vital to the survival of the U.S. If you think prices are high now---And most of us have never seen empty shelves, or gas lines, but ask the WWII generation about rationing.
Partisan politics is the real problem. The disrespect for the office of President is appalling. I think there should be term limits for all political offices. Our founding fathers thought that would be the way it would be, citizens would serve a term in Congress, then go back to their farms. (Back then, everyone was a farmer raising their own food.Big farm or small garden, but they all had that in common.) While that's no longer true, it's clear to me that they never intended for the Government offices to be a career. There are senators and representatives who think they have seniority, so they don't have to listen to the President, s/he has to listen to them (I still hold out hope that there will be a female President someday).
Congress fights too hard for their porkbarrel projects-they need them to please the back-home voters-at the detriment of all citizens. I think Congress should be prudent with our tax money, not spending it on porkbarrel projects.
I almost had a stroke when I heard some senator say we couldn't afford to send the illegals back home-we can afford porkbarrel though!
We can send our troops, weapons, armament, ammunition, shelters, food, and everything else needed to fight a war halfway around the world--but we can't load up a bus and drive these folks home? And why isn't there an "Ellis Island" at the border? and why isn't the National Guard patrolling the borders? And why isn't the wall built yet?
If they can keep people out of area 51 with cameras and sensors why aren't they being used at the border? The people trying to smuggle in drugs and terrorists are the only ones who will be sneaking. The people who are coming here to work will walk in voluntarily and get their background check done and be issued a work permit.
I agree with you-I bitterly hate war and the money spent on conflict could be spent on better things. But, I am not "peace-no matter what" and I don't care if other countries think we're "nice". If we took their attitude, then I shudder to think what would be the outcome.

No, I am and always have been an independent. There is today a vanishingly small difference between the Demopublicans and the Republicrats.
Some of my political opinions are liberal and some are conservative. Neither of the major parties adequately represents my political views.

I agree with you, except I do not believe that money should be an issue in any war. Of course I know it is. I am an American first, and I will vote for the ideas of the candidates.
