Archaeologists are still looking. Some of them do believe Atlantis existed, but it hasn't been proven, yet.

I firmly believe Atlantis existed. I'm split between them being destroyed in a cataclysm as stated, and them deciding to actually take their civilization undersea and "disappear" until the rest of the world caught up. Maybe both.

I think the stories of the crystals, etc., may have been the work of a publicity seeker, though. I think it more likely from all the info out there that Atlantis was actually around the area of Greece.

I know many scientists and historians believe it was just a moral story. However, they also believed that about Troy until someone took the Iliad and the Odyssey and used them to pinpoint Troy's location and excavate it. Surprise - it was real. I'm pretty sure the same thing will happen one day with Atlantis.

I believe it did exist. It was reported to have been powered by crystals that harnessed solar power. It is also rumored to have been destroyed by greed when someone tried to force the people of another country / land to do the Atlantean's will by using the power of the crystal to try and destroy the others.

Josh Bernstein, the host of Digging for the Past [hope that is exactly what the name is, but not sure] did a special episode on looking for Atlantis, and while they did not find it where one fellow was sure it would be, he did a post-script follow up and said that some locals had shown or told him where it was located. Look up History Channel and look for Josh's show from last season.

Well, Plato first mentioned history of Atlantis in his discovery dialogues called Timeaus and Critias. Plato described it as land that completely relied on Naval power, and was a very powerful and advanced civilisation. But, Atlantis sank into the sea during a failed attempt at invading Athens in a single day and night of misfortune. In the dialogues, Plato describes Atlantis as a real place and doesn't make a mention to whether or not it is made up. Although there is evidence of these dialogues that Plato created, because not only the dialogues themselves are so old, but the fact that if Atlantis existed, it did 9000 years before Plato's time, it is very unclear if Atlantis did exist or not. Because it is so old, no one knows specifically where it would lay and no other peices of literature except for Plato's dialogues evident its existence.

Atlantis is the most famous of the mythical islands. The story was first told by Plato, in his Critias.

Most scholars believe that the story of Atlantis was a fiction created by Plato that was merely a story created to illustrate some point. Nevertheless, the legend has seemed to have captured people's imagination. There have been dozens of theories about where the "real" Atlantis was. These theories have ranged from sunken islands in the Atlantic, to Cuba, to Thera, as well as many others. Many books have been written with "evidence" to "prove" the real location of Atlantis.
