Last fall in Jena, Louisiana, the day after two Black high school students sat beneath the "white tree" on their campus, nooses were hung from the tree. When the superintendent dismissed the nooses as a "prank," more Black students sat under the tree in protest.

A series of white-on-black incidents of violence followed, and the DA did nothing. But when a white student was beaten up in a schoolyard fight, the DA responded by charging six black students with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

It's a story that reads like one from the Jim Crow era, when judges, lawyers and all-white juries used the justice system to keep blacks in "their place"--but it's happening today. The families of these young men are fighting back, but the odds are stacked against them.

Yes I have heard of this and it is a tragedy. The only thing about the story you posted is the fight was not an ordinary schoolyard fight, the kid was beaten into unconciousness. I think there is plenty of blame to go around on both sides. I however think 22 years is far to extreme a penalty. Racism is an ugly thing and I hope this horrible thing can teach people everywhere just how no good ever comes of it.

Problem is with your way of thinking is that there were six on one in that fight. That makes it a lot more than a fight. That makes it an attack and assault and battery.

Basically what you have is six bullies that don't have the guts to fight someone man to man one on one: : and bullies come in all colors.

I'd feel the same way if it had been six white students attacking one black student.
