When Elizabeth 1st was on the throne she ruled the country taking advice from her prime minister - it does'nt seem to be like that anymore, margaret thatcher, tony blair, now gordon brown appear to make up the rules and present them to the Queen as a done deal - have we ever heard about the Queen saying "actually i don't think thats law is a good idea" - i would like to see the Queen and Prince Charles making decisions for the good of the country - who rules this country Queen or government? are we a dictatorship? Do we have a president? or are we still the united KINGDOM?

The right of the monarchy to rule was removed during the civil war. The Queen appears a nice person, but I don't think she is educated enough to make such decisions concerning laws, no disrespect, but when she was a child they didn't attend schools and it was all left to a governess who may not have been converse with all subjects. I think Prince Charles does voice his concerns and when he does he gets castigated by the media. The government rules this country to our cost.

the queen doesn't hold any power. The elected government runs this country and the job of the queen is just a ceremonial position, as it should be. Who is to say that the queen knows whats good for the country, we elect the government who are there (supposedly) to do what is good for us. Having the queen making decisions would make us a dictatorship becuase no one ever elected her and we never had a choice about having her, whereas with the prime minister if we don't like what they are doing we can just get rid of them

Things are a lot different now..however the quee works her socks off...I'm not a royal fan, but I watched a documentary...and she was flying left right and centre...meeting people, presidents etc....at her age it must be knackering...my nan is like ten years younger than her....and I think it would probably do her head in travelling that much...so I say big up to her...she's flying the flag!

The Queen has to scrutinise and sign every Bill that is passed in the House of Commons. She must have agreed to each and every one of them although she has the power to throw them out.In reallity the monarchy is now just a figurehead.

The British monarchy is technically powerless in Britain because they are mere symbolic heads of the former British Empire. Thus, they cannot take more active roles in the society.

'When Queen Elizabeth 1st' - you seem to be missing out the rather crucial Civil war, a rather crucial beheading of a king and George the 3rds battles with parliament. Things have moved on...

no roryal family is not democratically accountable there it acts only as figurehead - power is held by the government (the administration) because its can get its programme of legislation through Parliament (the legislature) which has democratic legitimacy because it is elected by the people
